Reading for testing

Posted in Work on April 29, 2008 by irrational

So CSTs start tomorrow.  For two hours I will be proctoring state testing for the 7th-grade honors students.  We are required to walk around the room throughout the two hour period, so I am going to get some reading done.  I’m excited to be reading an R.A. Salvatore fantasy book.  I haven’t read a book this “fun” in a while, so I’m excited :) .  What good books have you read lately?

Teaching Assignment

Posted in Work on April 20, 2008 by irrational

I got my teaching assignment for next year and am excited for the new curriculum we’ll be implementing.  Only 35 days left for these students.  I’m trying to look at it as 35 days left to love these students, but sometimes it’s hard.

Discipline Issue Part II

Posted in Work on April 18, 2008 by irrational

Well, apparently what I did was effective after all.  I expected today to be another difficult day, but only a couple of kids even tried anything extreme and the others told them to stop.  Yay!  I’ll make it to the end of the year after all :)

Discipline Issue

Ok, here’s the scenario.  You’ve got a classroom full of EL1s&2s as well as about 7 special education students who are receiving indirect services.  One of them (random student every time who I can rarely seem to catch) makes some snide/rude/obnoxious comment to another student, and the entire class errupts into a loud roar of “ooooohhhhhhhhh!”

Help!  These kids are going to kill me.  When I can catch the first kid who either makes the comment or starts the uproar, it’s totally fine.  I discipline that kid and the rest are good.  When I can’t catch the kid, it’s HORRIBLE!!!!  I’ve done the whole line them up outside until their silent and take them back outside everytime until it stops.  That worked for a few days, but I don’t want to keep doing that.  We’re losing too much class time.

 Any ideas?

Next Year

At this point in the school year, I find the main source of my energy stemming from excitement for the next year; wondering what my assignment will be, speculating about the new students I will encounter, and looking for ways to better my lesson plans.  It’s so exciting!  Am I a freak, or are any of you with me?
